Q: What is assistive technology?

A: Assistive technology, or AT, is a term that includes a wide range of devices or tools and services that can help people learn, work, and live more independently.  AT devices can be very simple and inexpensive or very complicated and costly--or anywhere in between.  Simple devices are things like magnifiers, foam tubing on a fork to make it easier to hold, and reachers to get things off the top shelf.  The most sophisticated technology includes devices like computerized speech devices, controlling computers with eye gaze and systems that can control aspects of a person's environment with a simple voice command or switches.
